Yoga, the Sanskrit word for "union", was developed 5,000 years ago in India as a system of bringing mind, body and spirit into balance. Yoga has now become popular all over the world as people experience the benefits of a regular yoga practice.

Yoga is a process that teaches you how to focus your awareness through your breath while performing specific postures. Yoga can be incorporated into a cross-training program and will enhance your training in the following areas:

INCREASED MOBILITY: Most people think of yoga as a deep stretching activity and this is certainly true. All forms of yoga will include a deep stretching component. Stretching muscles and connective tissue on a regular basis will lead to an increase in joint mobility and skeletal flexibility. You will benefit from increased performance while simultaneously reducing the risk of injury.

IMPROVED STRENGTH & BALANCE: What non-yogis don't know is that yoga will also build strength in all areas of the body including the upper body, lower body and core strength. Many types of yoga will also include poses that challenge your ability to balance. Strengthening new muscles and improving balance will lead to increased performance in other sports.

BREATH CONTROL AND CALMNESS: Yoga brings awareness to your breathing and helps to establish a strong and effective breathing pattern. This can effectively cross over to other activities. In addition, yoga can improve concentration skills, improve sleeping patterns and lead to an overall sense of calmness.
